Kyphoplasty

Background – A compression fracture occurs when the vertebral body fractures and collapses. This typically occurs secondary to osteoporosis. A stooped posture (kyphosis) can occur following multiple compression fractures. Kyphosis can impede activities of daily living in addition to causing pain.

Balloon Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive treatment for spinal compression fractures. If pain following a compression fracture does not resolve with rest, bracing, and medication, you may be a candidate for a Kyphoplasty. The goal is of the Kyphoplasty procedure is to use a balloon to restore vertebral body height and alignment. The balloon creates a low-pressure cavity that is subsequently filled with a special cement to stabilize the fracture, prevent further collapse, and reduce pain.
